Done this photo at the Hook Head (Co. Wexford, Ireland) and I'm having trouble with the colour version. It looks weird and artificial. I'm sort of happy with the tones on the black and white (2) and I done a slightly darker version of the colour one (3) which is marginally better but still not sitting right with me. So please help with some good advice if you have time to spare... Thanks in advance
(Side note; the picture is level, the lighthouse is actually like this although I might straighten it eventually because it bugs my eyes too)
Norbert,
I like the composition and feel of the image. The leading lines are great.
Have you tried using luminosity masks? This may help - you can isolate tomes and luminosity of the image and build the edit selectively and gradually.
I would approach it by breaking it into three parts - the foreground, buildings and the sky. Then build the edit up slowly.
Also, it looks like there may be a conflict/imbalance with the white balance.
Just my two-cents.
Thanks Roger, much appreciated
No issues - fyi - image three looks best to my eye.
This is my eye...
Softened, Simplified and reduced Saturation on foreground; shifted the greens to yellows.. and did a slight dodge and burn.
Just my thoughts, nothing more.
If I were to further edit, Id bring down the entire foreground and buildings into shadow (carefully) since we are in a silhouette.
Some people use black and white as a means to cover the subjection of color.
They all look fine !!
I use black and white because I can't get the colours right (Exhibit 1 on your left haha) I want to improve on that.
Agree with Trafford. Like poetry, not everyone will care for the same style of photo. I'm a nut for saturation in my own images, but find all sorts of variety interesting in the work of others.
