Ruth Carll's picture

Late Evening Fishing

There is a low bridge over some swampland near my house that I like to swing by on the way home from work. On this day a heron was fishing in the last light of day. I don't do landscapes often and am not sure my dark, abstract style works in this subject.

I think it does work, Ruth! In fact, it's a great idea, and as ever your composition (including the bird's implicit gaze) is mistressful (!).

Although the tonalities may not be traditional, it reminds me of east Asian traditional paintings of such scenes.

I think it could be further "abstracted" by erasing more reeds, to remove it further from what could be taken for a simply underexposed image, and distilling the compositional elements further. At the moment, the banks of reeds seem to interfere with each other a litlle, crowding ever so slightly.

I've also slightly lightened the very top left, but when posted here, the whole image seems a little darker than when I'm working on it, so it may now be too hard to "read".

Nice edit Chris. I like to loss is the second layer above the bird. I'll play with this on the original. Thanks!

Nice low light is very striking on the reeds and I like the hint of them in the background. This caught my eye right off the bat. I'm a "negative space" kind of guy so this photo is right up my alley. The tiny orange-is speck toward the right side is a little distracting but that can be easily taken out. The white reflection below it could stay or go- I like the blackness out there. Is the sharpness slightly soft? Time for that new GFX 50R? Good eye, great photo Ruth.

Funny I did think about taking out the orangy speck (a floating leaf). That white spot is from fish and even though no one would know the but me, I like it! I am a negative space gal. Glad to have a friend! It is a little soft but I find that fStoppers can soften some uploads.

Thanks for the feedback!!! I really do learn for it!

Hi Ruth, without being influenced by other comments I do appreciate your artistic interpretation of this scene.
You have done a great job of highlighting/promoting the key elements to get the story across.
I also like that you have included just enough detail in the surroundings to support the image without becoming a distraction.

Definitely works for me..

Awesome Alan! Thanks!
