I think that in bringing up the brightness in the shadows, you've introduced "halo" artifacts, most obvious in the treeline where it intersects with the clouds.
Processing could deal with all this, but I think the image would still be limited by the "flat" lighting in the pit.
The sky and the foreground do compete for attention a bit, and I'd be inclined to crop a little off the top to balance them better.
