The Storm Rolls In

This is a storm rolling over Calgary, AB on June 13th 2020. It has now been rated as the 4th costliest natural disaster in Alberta's history at over $1.4 Billion in damages from hail and flooding in the Northeast area of the city. We chased this storm from about an hour's drive south of the city near Blackie to about an hour and a half drive north and east of the city. Near the small town of Rumsey. As destructive as it is, boy, what a photogenic storm it was! Shot on a Canon 60D with a Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 and Photorepublik ND8 filter. The last 3 shots are my favourites.

Great shots....all about being in the right place at the right time...!!

Amazing light in each of these photos. I've seem a strong green in the light when there is a violent storm. Did you color correct to remove a greenish tint?

I did not correct. The green colour is actually from heavy precipitation in the cloud and it'll be more green throughout the day and then go more blue at night as golden hour hits because of how the light refracts off the moisture droplets. Golden Hour has more oranges and reds than yellow, like in the day. More thunderstorms generally happen later in the day, hence the greens. When the reds hit the blues of the water droplets (especially with our eyes being more sensitive to blues) it appears more green. The green indicates that it is a very tall thunderstorm. Which is capable of producing large hail, heavy precipitation and possibly even tornadoes.

Really fantastic shots....!!

Thank you! Right place, right time. 😁
