Cody Yamaguchi's picture

Onomea Sunrise

I'm new to exposure blending but here's a shot that I've used multiple photos to capture the dynamic range I could see with my eyes. Any tips on exposure blending and editing?

Nice shot Cody. I like the way you captured the water rushing in...

🙏 Than you!

Agree with D Man, great shot and perfect shutter speed for the water!

Thank you! any good tips?

Ha I think you're doing just fine without any of my advice. Like I said, I think this is well executed. I like the movement of the water in the lower left, but might like to see a version of this that was timed to show the full arc of the wave that disappears off the bottom left corner (hard to say which I'd like better without seeing it). This is timed perfectly to get the wave crashing over the rock in the center though, so you might have to combine multiple frames so you don't lose that. Again though, I think this works as is.

Most of all, just keep shooting so we can all enjoy it!

I'd add that the exposure blending here looks good to me--you have details in the shadows and highlights without looking too HDR.

That you! I was afraid that I had too much detail in the shadow that it would look fake.

I would say the edit is well done as is, depends on what you're going for with respect to the image. I do think one thing you might want to try would be to apply a luminosity mask to the tree leaves (and increase the warmth on those, should give the leaves a sunkist look, might increase the overall warmth of the photo, same with the rock on the right hand side where it gets some sunlight on it). Maybe apply a bit of an orton effect as well should give everything a slightly soft look/bit more warm as well). My eye naturally goes to the sunset as is so composition and everything else is very strong, overall great image.

Great idea! I’ll have to try it out.
