John Pless's picture

fall color at Cloudland Canyon

made this picture this morning at Cloudland Canyon, It had been raining and it was about 30 minutes after daylight. I found the little waterfall down in a gully below the trail. I got setup and then noticed the whirlpool. Any comments would be welcome.
After taking some of your comments to heart I went in and cropped the image, then flipped it. I think that it reads better now. Your thoughts please

Hey John, nice shot buddy, I do think that you should revisit the spot, I think there is a much simpler composition (Ie move closer get the swirl into the bottom left of the photo. Or walk much closer and change the angle slightly). Or if you're hard set on that composition apply a bit of a vignette.

Jaspreet puts it well, John. I didn't see the whrlpool as it is overpowered by the very strong colours and textures around it.

Also, these circulating eddies move very slowly, often necessitating very long exposures to create a full or nearly full loop. Some of my own attempts when I couldn't get one long enough remind me of macaroni! Not the look I was after...

Hi John. Many opinions may be leading to same point subconsciously. For my thoughts each frame shall tell some story. for me, if the water fall is the focal point in this frame, it shall get that importance. its kind of getting lost. there are many distractions. the composition is seeing a lot. no element is leading towards the hero. I feel saturation too is distraction. there is a black blob to the right of fall. relation between waterfall and swirl can also be established. many possibilities.

I agree with Jaspreet and chris in concept.

Hi John. I'm new to Fstoppers and I'm just walking around and viewing images. I learn a lot looking at what other photographers are doing. I liked your images when I first saw them and after reading your comment I took a look at the adjustment...really nice work. I'm a neophyte so at this point I don't have much to offer other than knowing what I like and what appeals to me. I love the intensity of the colors too!

And I'm glad you have posted a comment, neophyte or not, Furaha. Anyone here is on FS because of some aesthetic sense, and so-called neophytes' views are untarnished by rules and convention.

"Knowing what I like and what appeals to me" is ultimately the only worthwhile guide, and this inevitably evolves over time. Your portfolio is already impressive. Keep posting and commenting!

Thank You Chris. I've spent an inordinate amount of time on Instagram which serves my purpose as an actor because of the following I've built up; in terms of growth as a photographer I think this is a better place for me since it's all photography and videography. I will keep posting. Thank you for your encouragement!

Definite improvement, John! I wouldn't flip, though, partly on principle of showing others some version of what I actually saw, but also on the grounds that all other things being equal, we (European language-speakers?) "read' images from left to right. I much prefer water to flow from left to right in my images, so I'd have left it.
