Andrew Lambert's picture

Looking for constructive feedback

This image makes me think of Japanese woodblock prints. I like the muted colors but I'm not sure the image has enough compositionally, Thoughts?

Personally, I think cropping in to exclude the sky would be a good start. There is enough interest just in the textures on the mountain to make a stronger image.

What do you think about something like this...

Definitely like it, gets right to the core of interesting part of the image. But that snow cap gets me thinking about the Japanese woodblock prints so I’m torn on cropping it out. Thanks for the feedback

This is a very interesting and appealing image, Andrew. The rich range of pastel hues is beautiful. I totally get your Japanese woodblock parallel, and for that reason agree with your response to Peter, although this scene could lend itself to many fine images with different focal lengths and framings. I think there is "enough compositionally" but can think of some tweaks.

So I'd certainly keep the sky. I think your composition could be improved without changing the framing, by giving more emphasis to the snowy peak and top left, and de-emphasising the deeply ridged and coloured area at bottom right, which to my eye over-dominates the image slightly, detracting from it. I've taken the liberty of doing this in the first edit, by increasing contrast around the peak, and pulling back the vibrance at bottom right. (I also changed the hue slightly to a more purplish blue to blend the colours in this area more with the rest.) I don't know if this will show up well here - they're subtle changes to a subtle image. I commend you for the subtlety, not the norm on FS.

It's quite elongated, so if you've cropped the top, I'd add more sky, as the peak looks a bit jammed-in to me. I've approximated this in the second edit by cloning.

Chris thank you for the feedback, I hadn't considered the selective use of contrast and vibrance but will tinker with it now. I cropped the sky thinking it would create a more interesting positive and negative space. Thanks again

It's very beautiful landscape, well done!
Now, the composition and the colors its a bit of personal taste, if that was my picture I would make the sky a bit bluish, also a bit more clarity to the center layer of the mountain, where the red yellow volcano like is, Perhaps I would add a little reddish color there.
-I think it just missing something down and left to the Rule of thirds, perhaps a person or an old tree.
-Total remake, just to play around, hope you don't have a problem with that, just to show the power of the Rule of thirds

Thanks for the feedback, I think I’d like to leave the image as close to what I experienced as possible however, that’s an interesting alternative
