I took about an hour to go down to the local reservoir / wildlife management area a few days ago. It's just a short walk down the path to this little gem.
Nice job, Mark. I might just even up the tonalities slightly. The water at bottom right is just a bit murky & featureless; I'd be tempted to brighten it a little, especially as that gives a peek at the riverbed. Also, to a lesser extent, for my tastes the same applies to the densely shadowed trees at top right. I've taken the liberty of doing so.
Others may well disagree, and like the darkness of the original, seeing an appealing sense of mystery. Tastes differ - and it's YOUR image, after all.
I agree with Chris about the bottom of the picture being to dark and featureless. I think that I would probably crop up from the bottom. The about the top I would use a layer adjustment and lighten it up even more so that I could see the detail in that big rock that is in the stream. This is my take on the picture, But, It is your picture you should do what you wish with it
My crop would be the exact opposite of John's. If I had the time I would probably take Chris's version and crop out some of the trees, placing the top of the rapids at approx 1/3 from the top (rule of thirds.) I find the water much more interesting than the trees.
