Telelens & landscape photography

My favorite lens for landscapes is the 70-200/2.8S (paired with the Z7ii). When I tell people this, they always response with "but for landscapes you must use a wide angle". I don't agree with this in the slightest. Yes, I have a (extreme) wide angle, but I don't use that one nearly as much as my telezoom lens.

What do you think? Are you using a telezoom for your landscapes or just strictly a wide angle lens?

I use my 70-200 more often than my wide angle lenses as well, but when the shot calls for it, that wide angle can be indispensable!

Love those last two shots!

True! But I'm also often to lazy to switch lenses so I end up shooting panoramas lol

Matthijs, All of your shots are gorgeous. Well Done.

Thanks!

those are good shots...nice!

Spectacular shots! I love a longer focal length. Most of my favorite landscapes that have more mood and drama came from 200+ mm mostly thanks to punching in closer and removing other distractions.

Yes! Taking photos is getting simpler by zooming in!

I'm totally with you, Matthijs. I've passed up a 70 - 200, although I've had one in the past, and opted for an 80 - 400. It is my most-used lens, and my widest, "only" a 20mm, is my least-used. I guess it comes down to the way we see, and I often spot relatively small vignettes in the landscape which I want to isolate.

I agree with the others - these are all excellent. Lovely atmosphere. The third and fourth are my favourites. The compositions are particularly appealing. Well done!

Thank you for the kind words :) I also was debating between the new 70-200S and the 80-400 as they are the same price, but I didn't want to use an FTZ adapter anymore and the sharpness of that new lens is so good that even when I crop to 400mm, the details are still insane.

Majority of the people are thinking landscape photography is all about big vistas. Small vignettes or intimate landscapes are often missed. I guess that is the reason for saying wide angle lenses are the 'must use'.

As you Matthijs, I really like to use my 70-200mm lens. I use it more than a wide angle. Also, I wish to have more reach (like 100-400mm) more often than a wider lens (wider than 16mm on FF).

Telephoto lens gives me an opportunity to take an interesting shot on a not so attractive location.
