Jim B's picture

Tsé Bit' A'í

Translated from the Navajo, that means 'Rock With Wings.' A place sacred to the Diné people. Also known as 'Ship Rock.' But you may already have known that.

Beautiful shot of Shiprock.

Shiprock itself is somewhat 'monumental' in a Sacred Place sort of way. The shot is little more than how it appeared while I was there. I do, nonetheless, appreciate your comment, Darin.

Trying to get acclimated to what is accepted and what might go beyond the pale around here (no, I don't mean around Shiprock --that I'm relatively aware of-- I mean here in Fstopper-ville) in terms of discussion after the fact. Composition? Subject placement? Iconography? Aesthetics? Is there room for any of that around here? Or have I not dug deeply enough into the Forum?

I'm from far away, but this is a very different image of Tsé Bit' A'í than I've seen before, Jim. Much warmer, even the word kinder comes to mind.

I first ever heard of it (under its English name) in a John Sexton photo that's one of my all-time favourite landscape images. It looks majestic in a dry desert landscape in that photo. The phrase "We see things as we are, not as they are" comes to mind! (Not to suggest JS is a desiccated character at all!)

I like your version too, with the eye being very effectively led to the distant rock in several ways. It strikes me as painterly in the European landscape tradtion. I'm not sure if you're seeking opinion about composition etc, or just curious about what happens on FS. There IS plenty of room for the things you list; sometimes I and others will even post an edit of the original posted image here on the right. I try to gauge what the poster is seeking and respond to that.

As BP says, "Discussions" like this page start when a member of a Group posts an image or images, with whatever text is chosen. Then others can comment here on the right. As the original poster, you can edit the text at left and add images, bearing in mind that doing so may then make early Comments hard for new viewers to understand.

Posting will notify all members of the Group, and anybody who follows you. The way to generate discussion is to comment, post and generally be active. Put simply, it gets you noticed. Some images are posted and there is no reaction at all - no comments.

People here differ in what they seek and what they say. I assume that Portfolio images are posted seeking approval, and images for discussion are open to comment and criticism. Some Fstoppers are more sharp-tongued or abrupt than others, but frank trolling is thankfully scarce. The closest thing to it is giving a member's portfolio images low ratings across the board; this can be done anonymously, so provides cowards a place to be nasty and hide at the same time. If you're interested, the Minimalism, Abstract Experimental Group generates a fair variety of constructive viewpoints.

I hope you find FS interesting and stimulating as I do. You're off to a good start with your own portfolio. I hope you feel welcome.

Many thanks, Chris. As an FS 'noobie,' the assistance that you (and Broken) have thus provided helps me suss stuff out a lot more logically. It might even be said that I'm starting to 'get the picture.' Or something like that.

No problem with receiving criticism, whether it be sharp-tongued or valid and reasonably said. That said, however, I might oughta make mention of the fact that since sNarK is my first, main, and primary language, should I see something said that I can't defend --or that whatever aesthetic defense I might offer goes unheard--, or that I find incongruously unwarranted... well...... it may be advisable that the 'cowards' of which you speak be wearing linguistic Kevlar.
