Today, I bring two snapshots featuring the iconic arch at La Playa de las Catedrales. Though the framing remains akin, each photo captures a distinct moment, shaped by the movement of water and the waves.
Which one do you like most? Let me know!
Your pick spices up the vibe here.
Truth time: Soaked feet alert!
If your beach photoshoot doesn't end with wet feet, did it even happen?
Wet feet and Cold Feet as well. Be sure to rinse your tripod off with fresh water!
I like the first photo better than the second for a couple reasons. The portrait orientation lends to the wave action coming from back to front as a leading line.
Whereas, the composition of the wave action in the second leads away from the leading line cause by the primary light source.
That being said, I like the cloud formation in the second photo more as they appear sturdy as the rock formation. Although the clouds in the first mimic the softness of the wave action, the clouds would fit better in the softness of the water in the second photo.
Solution: swap the skies. 🤣
I love the color and lighting. Great job.
Thank you Dean!
I have to say that I preferred the first one when I saw them for the first time. But, I confess I prefer the second one now! hahaha
Of course! I cleaned my tripod with fresh water as soon as I arrived at home!
I knew I could convince you to change your mind.
No, you can't!!
The 2nd picture is my favorite for the following reasons: 1) The clouds and the bluish sky form a way more interesting pattern in the 2nd picture. 2) But more important for me, the leading lines of the waves in the 1st picture have a kind of hypnotic effect on me. These waves attract all my attention so that I tend to ignore the sky and the beautiful rock formation in the background instead of drawing my attention to the rocks as intended (no idea why this is the case). In the second picture I do see more subtle wave patterns first of all providing me with the impression that the water is flowing horizontally from the open sea towards the shore or the other way round. On a second glance these whitish wave patterns parallel to the shore line build an arc that draws my eyes into the left upper corner towards the lighted area of the sky and from there I'm following the white horizontal stripe in the rock formation to the right towards the arc built by the rocks.
So in the end I spend more studying the picture, seeing more details and ... . But: in the end, both pictures are great compositions!
Thank you for your detailed thoughts on the photos!
I completely agree with your take on the second one. The subtle wave patterns and how they guide the eye are spot-on observations. It's great to hear your perspective aligns with what I had in mind when I chose to share that shot.
I appreciate your time and thoughtful consideration!
I like both shots, but I agree with Dean regarding the sky switch. I would be quite happy to have taken either shot.
I think that the water in the second shot allows for the slope of the beach to enhance the sense of drawing the viewer into the rock.
Really well done on both.
Thank you very much for your words, Darin.
I lean towards the second one, and the more I look at it, the more certain I am. The line created by the water seems like a reflection of the cloud formation just above the rocks. I believe this completes the composition and makes it more robust.
I appreciate your observation and feedback!
Could I split the difference?
I love the water from the second shot but the sky from the first shot.
Combine the two?
It would be a killer mix!!
