Really good for your 2nd try! Did you process it in Photoshop? If not, i would give it more contrast around the dust part of the milkyway. For example you can make a high contrast curve adjustment layer, (you're fist point is the lightest part of the milkyway and the second is your darkest point!) then you can select a mask!
