Learning Black and White

Peter Coulson is the black and white king in my opinion, but of course we must create our own look. I didn't shoot in monochrome (still learning) but in Lightroom of course I desaturated the image - have it minimal clarity but if someone could give suggestions in regards to highlights vs shadows I'd really appreciate it. I know its about what looks appealing to ourselves but there are principles that should be learned as well.
