That depends entirely on what you're looking to say, in my opinion. It's a strong portrait styled with a somber narrative, and I love it for a story on a brooding artist, someone struggling with something, etc.
Personally, I enjoy it, classic Rembrandt. :)

Too much? Nah, looks great.
Use shadows? For me, that's what makes a portrait! I'm not as much a fan of high-key stuff.
As already mentioned, it's all about what you're going for. The lighting here really fits your expression so for me it all works well!
