Shooting portraits

Hello group,

I've been shooting for about 2 years but mostly landscape. I've done a few portraits and plan on doing more so I would love to get your feedback on the two shots I've uploaded.

Thanks

Nice, though would love to see the child's face that is kind of hidden in her sleeves. I bet she is making a cute face. The bottom picture has nice black and white tones, but what in the world is the black bar\stick\railing or whatever that her head is leaning on. Just an odd crop if you know what I mean. She seems very pretty with a great smile...I am sure there is a better portrait that could be captured.

Noted Joseph. Will keep that in mind. I can see how the black bar is distracting. She's leaning back on a chair. It was a candid shot and was trying to catch her before she moved. Thank you for your advice and critique.

I love the shot of the beautiful little girl in the woods. Perhaps a little fill flash on her face would help bring her out of the background. Off camera flash with some type of snoot or limiting modifier would bring her face to the forefront of the picture. The brighter jacket and the bright leaves to the left of her compete for attention with her face.
