It works because of the glints along the edge of the cap, nose, hands and on the strands of the beard - very nice. If I can ask, how low was the low brolly and where exactly was it?
The lower light was a bare speedlight(canon 540ez), only the top speedlight had the brolly. basically it was on the floor about 2 feet in front of the subject pointing up (so maybe 3 or 4 feet from the eyes).. was 1/64 power if i remember rightly. Provided no real purpose other than to fill the shadows around the eyes.
I like this shot. I would have composed it or cropped it slightly differently but that's always a subjective thing. Good one.

I guess i would crop it in a bit tighter from the right to reduce some of the black waistcoat
