What is your "Motto" in portrait photography?

Portrait photography is like directing a movie. tell your model a story to play, a memory to think & a goal to achieve, the rest would be her/his job to act, and ours would be to capture the moment when it feels right.

Nice shot

Thank you Lee, I have a feeling that it should be a little brighter or at least have more highlights. I would also appreciate your vote/rate (on my portfolio).

btw, I'll be glad to hear your motto about portrait photography or photography in general as well.

Not sure I have a motto... Perhaps it's "whatever it takes". I'll rate your whole portfolio now

haha, that is fair enough to push you do your best. wishing you good luck and best ideas ever.

btw, thanks alot, i was talking about this image but that was surprising, appreciate it. gonna do the same

Be Generous!
Early on in PJ work I learned that being generous in my work always made more impactive and meaningful images. Being generous never meant not being honest, just give to your subject generously and the subject will give likewise.
Years later I still live by that motto. Be it travel, portraiture, commercial, or architecture, being generous to my subject sets up a winning dynamic for us both.
Be generous!
-Strong shot, Farbod and good topic for discussion. Thanks!

thank you, your shot is great as well
also, thank you for taking a part of this discussion.

that motto is great, not only it will help your photography but also it is a good one in life itself I believe. in Iran, we have a proverb which says: "with each hand you give, you'll receive with the same hand." means however you treat the people or the environments around you, you will be treated the same way.

when you work with passion and love you live always get better results than when you work for the result.

wish you best moments for you to capture.

Came across a "motto" that is commandeered... "Created to create." I try use that now. Doesn't matter what I'm shooting. I need to create something. Anything. Good or not. And I've seen my work get better over time

I believe that it will be great if the person put the creation at first and the business and money at the second position of their intention. you get what I mean by that, right?

some people lose their purpose of existence when they reach the level that most of their thought are wrapped around the material world and stop caring about the true reason they chose the path they are in. like when a photographer just push the shutter button to earn money rather than creating something.

My overall motto in photography has always been "Life and Living Captured as Art". So I strive to create art in whatever I shoot.

nice, this would be a challenging motto for you, good luck

My motto, referring to a songtext of Jon and Vangelis: "Shine for me and I'll shine for you".

so technically, you will wait for a moment or expect others to do something first, then you will return the favor?
or it generally works like mutual benefit & team work?

Very sharp, Farbod. I haven't looked at it that way. What I mean with it, is that it's mutual. When somebody feels comfortable in front of the lens, I know how to capture that and vice versa. So when somebody doesn't want to be photographed, I can do all what I want, but there will be no sparkle on the image. So in fact it's the latter you wrote: mutual benefit & teamwork. In my opinion you never take a photograph on your own but always in collaboration with others.

right !
sorry, I didn't mean to be rude or to question it, I just couldn't understand exactly how it works. but now I feel we are almost on the same path.

I didn't consider your comment as rude at all, Farbod. So please don't apologize; there's no need to. Your comment made me think again about my motto; see it in another light, so in fact I've to thank you for giving me your point of view. But I guess we're indeed on the same path. Thanks for taking your time to write another comment; it's much appreciated!

well, your welcome I guess, haha
yes, it had 2 sides so I couldn't figure it out 7 understand how you see it. photography is all about our own perspective or point of view of a subject & in life people are always fighting over their personal thoughts of an idea even though they might be talking about the same thing, because but they see it differently from their point of view.
putting our selves in a third person view is the best way to avoid any misunderstanding.

:)
Yep: it certainly about perspective and as you describe viewing in third person is a good way to scrutinize the subject.
Being a math teacher as well, the accompanied image is dead-on. Thanks for sharing this one!

my main motto would be " to not hurt people" what i mean by that, is to make them look beautiful and interesting,.

your picture is beautiful and interesting. so well done :D

first of all, thank you so much :D

about your motto, I think trying to make people look beautiful depends on many different factors, like your shooting technique, lighting, story and mainly knowing the charater you are photographing. this would be a challenging factor to get to know the person, analyze their character and try the to emphasize the positive aspects of their character in the shot by choosing the necessary light, technique and/or pose. this would be a perfect match for lifestyle & journalist photographers I think.
