I think we can see what you were trying to do and it was a good idea, but the light wasn't working with you. Maybe increasing the light on the model in post? And darkening the highlights on the water in front of the model, so the highlights become a vee echoing the shape of her arms?
I disagree the light was working against him. Seems like beautiful light, but those highlights in the water can distract from her. The first thing your eye goes to isn't her, isn't what's behind her. It doesn't need much, but I'd definitely play with darkening that / maybe bringing her up a touch.
I'd probably also crop. Likely from the top and right. If you had more of that orangeish flare, I may keep it, but as it stands currently it isn't enough to be interesting. It's just an orange distraction on the edge of the frame. That crop may also reinforce the lines of her forearms aswell.

That's why the light was working against him. If the light distracts you from an essential element of the picture, then it is working against you, yes?
For my taste this photo only needs to pull up some exposure in the body of the girl, a radial filter who brings up the arms and let the edges dark so they maintain the contrast. Not too much so can't compete with the head though. The Bright in the water is beautiful and don't need to be darkened because is adding to the image creating a halo around the girl and is soft versus the sharpness of the head's girl. Perhaps pull down the highlights in the head looking for texture and bring a bit of a contrast. But everything I said is just a question of opinion. In general the photo is great. I love it! Congrats!!!

Great frame!

Yes, in that regard it was working against him. The light on the subject, however, is quite pleasant and therefore not working against him.
Solid points all around
