On the 1st image, you're subject is lost because he is blending with the background. A simple way to fix that would be to have your subject wear something lighter or complimentary to the background. For the 2nd image, maybe something animated and angular body language for some interest or add something else in the frame to give a more compelling story might help. The 3rd one works. Keep it up you're going in the right direction!
Yes, the third is definitely the one that shows what the OP is trying to do.
It's a tricky shot tonally. I think some fill-in flash would have helped. Failing that, a version using one shot HDR and crushed blacks could be interesting - I could knock one up and post it if the OP wants?
Otherwise, the guy is definitely a wide angle shooter and needs to move closer to his subject and fill flash to his tricks. If this is his main style I'd consider swapping the DSLR for a Fuji X100 or a Panasonic LX100 to get a leaf shutter for easier flash fill.
