Do you use frequency separation?

I was retouching a few photos and this question dawned on me. Do you use frequency separation? How frequently? And why do you?

I'd say I rarely use frequency separation, if ever. I'd say less than 5% of my portrait retouching involves FS, unless the makeup was poorly done, etc. I like to stay on the natural side and consider FS to be a "last resort" adjustment in certain situations.

Maybe I'll put an article together explaining more in-depth on why. With that said, do you?

Hello Nick! This depends on the situation, model and the lighting i use. As you mentioned, In a situation when makeup is poor i use FS when retouching. In my Last shoot the model doesn't wanted heavy makeup and she is beauty in naturally and No wrinkles, no scars, no patches. So the retouch was very simple.

I feel I can get better results with just dodging and burning, and almost as fast as with FS!

When I first began my career and was introduce to phlearn, yes I ran to FS. But as I've evolved, I've learned the value of a MUA and hair stylist which requires less retouching. Dodge and burn sure, but rarely FS anymore.
