Todd Wedge's picture

New photographer, first shoot.

Hello everyone!
I bought a Canon 80d about 3 months ago and decided to start teaching myself photography and now I'm obsessed. I pretty quickly realized that this is something that I want to centre my career around.
The other day I had the opportunity to shoot two Acroyoga teachers who wanted some social media pictures. They were running late and as a result it was far darker outside than I would have liked and I may dial back the highlights in the skin in the second picture but I'm fairly happy with some of these. I know I have a lot of learning to do and would love any feedback I can get!

Acroyoga is super cool and these are some fun shots! I understand that some of this might have been out of your control, but the outfits here just get lost in the darkness of your backgrounds. Even a brighter light setting outside wouldn't have helped much because of the nature of your background. The third shot in particular is somewhat difficult to discern where your subject stops and the background begins.

If you have the time to do any pre-planning for your shoots, try to pick your location ahead of time and make sure that their outfits coordinate well with that. Or, if they show up with something you didn't expect, then try to switch up your direction of shooting to set them against something lighter so that they stand out against your backdrop a bit better. :)

I definitely agree. I was trying in post to give some level of separation between the two but that was a losing battle. As you said, I need to put more consideration into background. Thanks!

If you really want to feed your obsession, pick up some cheap lights ala Strobist 101, then you can use them as rim lights for shots like this. What a wonderful way to get started with photos like this!

I definitely need to start learning about using flash, and i know it will give me way more consistent results. I just find it so daunting for some reason. Thanks

I started with a local photography Meetup group workshop, which really helped me get started. Good luck!
