I don't know anyone in the area but I can assure you that most wedding photographers are always looking for help. If you can start helping one, and you do a good job, the others will start hiring you too.
I've found several in my area online and have emailed them about being an intern/assistant.....so far out of the 10-15 I've emailed in the past month, not one has responded, not very professional but I'll do my best to stay positive. Thanks for your response Lee. :)
Don't email... I've been in your shoes and live in south Florida. Call them, I know when I called I didn't want to be a pest, but it worked and I started 2nd shooting for some great photographers that let me have images for my portfolio.
