Asking for permission to use the images to promotion.

Hi! :)
I am fairly new into the wedding photography business.
Something that i have been wondering about is, when do you ask your client for permission to use the images on your blog, website and so one or do you even ask?
So im currently setting up my new website and it hit me that i don't know if the clients know that im using there images on my new site.
Up to now i haven't really had a good web portfolio, so it hasn't really been a thing that i have been thinking about until now. So far i have had good experience with clients and they have loved my work. So i wondering what should i do in the present, should i just post them to build portfolio. And then i wondering how i could do this in the future, what is a good way to ask the client for permission to use the images for promotion.

So what are you guys doing?, are you asking them in the client meeting or are you sending them a message after the wedding and asking for permission to use the images?
I have heard of people who send out a survey on how there experience was and also asking them for permission to use the images on there webpage.

What are some of your experiences?

I have a section in my contract, that I can use their picture for my portfolio or for any contest. They can refuse to sign it but it's also in the contract, that if I cannot use the images they have to pay a different price.
Always make sure that you include that to your contract to avoid any misunderstanding or problems in the future.

I have the same thing. It's going to cost them a hell of a lot more if I'm not able to use the images for my portfolio.

As Rafael said, it goes in the contract and I give them the option to waiver before they sign. Not sure about the different pricing though, I think every client should have the right to refuse the use of their images without penalty.

Pretty much what the rest have said, put it in your contract for all your future clients.

I'm guessing you have images you need to use for content now that you haven't received permission for?
Always stay on the safe side & never assume you know this client & "they won't mind".
I have clients from all walks of life and many ask that I not use the images in blog or print for many varying reasons.

The easiest thing you can do now is email everyone in your image list that you want to use with a brief explanation of how you want to use their images. When they respond keep that email as your release or limit. Email is technically in writing and in these minor usage cases can work (web site, blog etc)

If you're submitting to a magazine and you don't have written permission from your client it would be best to download a release, have it signed and keep it on file.

There is also a great iPhone & Android app called Releases that you can have people sign on the spot right on your phone. It has releases for several stock houses as well as property releases and so on. It makes it easy if you're out shooting stock.

The easiest way to incorporate it into your contract - if you don't have a proper lawyer to draw it up - is to download a free model release form and include it as a separate section.
