Posing the Bride & Groom

This is one issue I face more than any. I'm pretty confident with people but when it comes to just the three of us I feel like I loose some confidence. I don't like to pose couples too much and just let them position themselves how they feel comfortable, but realise sometimes it's necessary. I think I can get the couple relaxed and happy, just need to break the mould a bit with poses... any helpful resources/advice?

This is one of my most recent wedding shots I really liked...

Hi Joe. When you first start doing weddings the posing is the hardest bit. If you let people just do their own thing without you giving some direction then they might never be in the same photograph. I use some standard poses and then just get some variation into those shots while they are still in that basic pose.Sometimes also if people are nervous looking at me to start with I get them to look at each other for a few shots to help them relax. Also when looking at each other they are not going to blink in your shot. This was often a problem when shooting film. Now you can check and shoot it again. The above shot is nice but I would get them to lean their faces closer together and while still in that basic pose also get them to look at each other and then encourage a kiss.If you follow the link to my blog you will see a post with some of my shots. Also when in the blog if you go to the index and click on wedding photography you will find many of my tips and examples that I have taught people over the years.

Thanks for your input Geoff, appreciated. I've also been through the nerve wracking hell of shooting weddings on film, so it's much easier these days. I do often get the couple to look at each, kiss etc it's more just trying new poses. It's actually really interesting to observe how different couples to react to each other, some can\'t keep their hands off each other and others are so coy and reserved.

I'll be sure to head on over to your site and check things out, thanks again.

Glad to be of help joe. Keep up the good work.I love it that all of us photographers can always keep learning from each other. One of my heroes in Australian Wedding Photography,Ian Hawthorne, who I never met made a quote once that sticks with me."It's an article of faith with me that the best ever wedding photograph is still yet to be taken."
