A Time To Rest

Flamingos are a joy and a challenge to photograph. Flamingos are not born pink. Their feathers get their color from their diet, primarily algae and brine shrimp. They are tall birds, some stand 4" 7" in height and are highly social birds, sometimes living in flocks numbering thousands. Flamingos use a variety of calls, including honks, grunts, and growls, to communicate with each and the sounds are not the pleasant ones of chirping birds awakening you in the morning! Flamingo symbolism includes balance, grace, beauty, love, and confidence, stemming from their striking appearance and graceful nature, such as standing on one leg. Flamingos don't sleep a great deal of time, instead taking short naps throughout the day and night in short bursts. They sleep standing on one leg, a position that helps reduce muscle fatigue and conserves body heat. While they sleep, one half of their brain remains awake, a defense mechanism called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, allowing them to remain alert to predators.
