Happy New Year Mister Policeman

Taken during the Songkran festivities in Nakhorn Ratchasima, Thailand

Thai new year celebrations tend to last for 4 days. For many people it is a rare opportunity to head home and visit family.
Through the years, or decades, celebrations have evolved from a rather sober ceremony during which younger generations gently pour scented water over the hands of parents, grandparents, and respected elders to show gratitude and respect, and gently applying a traditional chalky white paste is to faces which is meant to bless, protect, and bring good luck into the new year... towards 4 days of water mayhem with water pistols, buckets and giant water containers on overcrowded pick-up trucks, and well, still chalky paste.
A lot of intoxicated youngsters, but rarely spinning out of control. Even Police officers in the midst of it all show remarkable restraint.
Nonetheless, every year there is an alarming spike in road death toll victims during Songkran week.
