Of Blood And Dance

Omo Valley, Ethiopia.

The Hamer people. In this ceremonial whipping of the female members, violent lashings leave deep scars on the backs of women. In a frenzied, almost trance like atmosphere of shouts and screams and trumpets blaring and blood streaming, the women actively encourage their own whipping. If it wasn't shocking enough, that women in the centre left of the image is about 8 months pregnant.
