I'm in the same camp. Since I see you're a Nikon user, Tristan, I can recommend the 80-400 - cumbersome, but optically excellent with good VR. I use mine a lot.

Agreed. I want to do more with the long lens... ideally in the 300-400mm range. I have been using my 50mm for landscapes a lot and I love that too.
