Avalokiteśvara at Banteay Chhmar

Avalokiteśvara is a bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. This bodhisattva is variably depicted, described and portrayed in different cultures as either male or female. There are only two of these remaining at the Banteay Chhmar temple in northwest Cambodia.

Gabe, I like your photo rendition of the sculpted Avalokiteśvara, wonderfully lit to get the maximum detail of the relief. It’s a shame the head area is so eroded or is that a cultural thing I am ignorant of. I’m aware that through antiquity culture practices are used spiritually the modern preservationist and curator would view as vandalism.
