I was inspired by puertorican bomba dancers and Colombian palenqueras for this photo series. I wanted to reimagine it and modernize it by shooting it in my editorial portrait style.
The whole set was created by me DIY. I handpainted the walls and the floor on the set with a sponge. I went out into the neighborhood and gather palm tree leaves to create big palm trees to frame along the edges of the image. I wanted the set to feel weathered and tropical. I actually shot this in my tiny apartment because there are no excuses when you want to do something you figure out how to do it.
