Many years ago I had my choice of assignments after graduating from a military technical school, Hokkaido being one of them. After talking with someone who had been stationed there and learning about the winters and that it would take about 48 hours round-trip to go to Tokyo, I decided that southern Italy was more to my taste. I still am sorry that I never have gotten to Japan but this picture reminds me that I might not have enjoyed Wakkanai. Like the photo, though.
