Haleakala Sunrise

Haleakala, Maui

Seeing the sunrise on top of Haleakala takes effort and planning. From the hotel, it was about 2 hours up a completely black, switch backing road. You travel from sea level to 10,000 feet. Altitude plus all the turning makes it a pretty rigorous drive. Though it was September in Hawaii, the peak of the volcano was a frigid 34 degrees. Waiting in cold, darkness it wasn't too long before the sun broke through the clouds and it all became worth it.
