Times Square in Manhattan is known as "the crossroads of the world," or modestly as "the center of the universe." It is sometimes more poetically referred to as "the heart of the Great White Way."
These terms for Times Square did not arise from nothing. When one walks through it one has the feeling as if the world is vibrating with powerful energy. The cacophony of sounds of cars, pedestrians, roadside musicians, and nearby demonstrations can make your head spin. The energy of the place excites, but also intimidates a bit. You can feel it in the air and even in your body.
