While climbing to the rim of a cinder cone at sunset, I happened to look back at another cinder cone and noticed the rising moon. There are about 2,200 such volcanoes in the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. They are called, 'monogenetic volcanoes' as they developed in a single, energetic eruption that lasted only weeks to months and will never erupt again.
