Feel like a true explorer and get close to the breathtaking nature of Svalbard on an expedition cruise! Join Poseidon Expeditions by https://poseidonexpeditions.com/arctic/svalbard/ for some ice cold fjord action. It is a well-known polar cruise operator that offer numerous Svalbard tours, such as to Spitsbergen, Greenland, Polar Ice Edge, and more. For something different take a daytrip to Pyramiden - the abandoned ghost town with its deserted buildings is ready for you to explore it. Or try dog sledding with huskies! And how about hiking up one of Longyearbyen's mountains? Finally, be brave and wrap up warm before heading out into Adventfjorden in your kayak at twilight - what could be more magical?!
Longyearbyen is the hub of Svalbard, with plenty of places to stay at prices varying between £100-£300 a night. If you're feeling adventurous though, why not try something different? With expeditions and tours available in Pyramiden from March 'til October - there's never been a better time to explore!
If you're looking to visit Svalbard and take part in certain activities, timing is key! Don't expect your standard stunning sunrises and sunsets during the summer months as it's 24 hours of light. For great landscape photography, consider visiting between May-June when the snow starts melting - perfect for capturing that wintry feel. But if you wanted to try activities like dog sledding or snowmobiling then an autumn/winter trip would be best since there needs to be a fair amount of ice cover for those experiences.
If you're looking to visit the Arctic Circle and experience a boat trip or cruise, summer's your season! During my own escape in early June I was lucky enough to have just the right temperature. There were plenty of snow-capped mountains for dreamy landscape photos but still no icy waters blocking me from experiencing all that sailing had to offer - plus some Husky rides too! All this is possible if you do your homework first, so make sure your adventures are properly planned according to when activities run.
