My wife and I were trying out a new hike in Grand Teton National Park, and on the way back we noticed a small bird following along with us, flying low from tree to tree as we hiked. For a while I could only catch that it was small and brown, and initially I thought only that it was a robin. Eventually it landed on a tree right off of the path, and I noticed two yellow eyes staring back at me—from the backside of the bird. I realized then it was an owl, one I had not seen before, and in mid-day (not at night). Surprisingly, it had no issue with me slowly walking right up to it, probably within 10 feet of the branch it was on. It just kept looking at me, relatively unconcerned, while it let me photograph it. My favorite is this shot, with an expression that just seemed perfect for the moment.
