By the scruff of the neck

A tiny crab spider waits and ponders after having just caught its dinner. Image is a stack of 12 shots at f/16, 1/4s, iso 200 with D500, Tokina 100mm using sb-700 flash with diffuser. Taken on a dreary evening fall northeast evening.

I was wondering if this is a common tactic for this species of crab spider and we've just haven't witnessed it before your image here.

Indeed quote common. Have seen it a few times in the field. Never had the right conditions to make an image before though. This time I was able to observe it for a few minutes before setting up my equipment. It was windy but with some patience, it worked out.
