This was shot on the Niagara River, Buffalo New York near Niagara Falls. This was a lucky shot. I was shooting the river with a friend when we noticed this Heron. He stayed perfectly still for almost 10 minutes, while we were able to move in close. Just being able to watch this amazing bird was good enough. Capturing this image just made it that much better!
F 8, ISO 100, 1/60 Sec, 55mm
Tiny detail, if you had moved a little to the left, effectively moving the Heron's head into the flowing water ( replacing the background, moving it off the rocks that are of similar color to its head ) you would've gotten a technically and visually a little more pleasing shot, and you would be placing its eye according to the rule of thirds composition at the same time.
Not that the shot is bad, you simply could've done better ( not saying this in an offensive way, I'm telling the same to myself multiple times per day :D ).
Further "enhancing" the current shot, you can clone out the tree part creeping on the bottom right corner of the frame, content aware fill will replace it with realistically looking rock & water.
The exposure and the rest are spot on.
gratz!
