"It all started as a challenge from a friend having an original, different picture of my girlfriend and I. I decided to set everything on a beach. Camera on a tripod, triggered wirelessly by a set of Yongnuo RF-602. A friend was behind us, doing the steel wool sparks you see. We had tied a camera strap to a whisk, this way it was easy to put on/remove the steel wool once it had burned completely.
To light it on fire, using a 9v battery is the easiest way, a simple contact and it starts burning. After this, it's only a matter of spinning the setup in circles to send sparks all over the place. Takes about 20sec~ for the whool to burn. My girlfriend and I had an not so easy job of standing still for 25 seconds without moving. The water was cold, lots of wind, but it was worth it."- David Rivest
