"I've slowly been getting in to photography after directing video for the last few years. After a really inspiring trip abroad at the beginning of the year I decided to dedicate more time to photography and picked up my first studio strobes. This of course means I try to run lighting experiments on my poor girlfriend whenever she's at my house. She has a dark look when she wants to and of course that wonderful black hair. I asked her if she has anything dark to wear and she happened to bring along one of her black skirts and some other dark goodies. I sat her in front of my fireplace and gave her a glass of wine and voila!
The lighting arrangement is similar to a setup my DP used on one of our MMA shoots. Instead of the Kinos on that shoot, I put a mettle600 head inside a 27.5" Elinchrome Deep Octa Box. The light is directly above her head about 30 degrees toward the camera. The shadows from the soft box and the texture from my fireplace give it the dark look I was going for!"- Justin Nizer

Nice shot, but I;m not really seeing any effect from the fireplace here.
It's the background texture, the chimney, leading up from her arm past her head, not a light source. At least that's how I see it. vov
Ah, gotcha.
