"I wanted to have a little bit of fun with my gels and my old knock off flash units. I have not pulled them out since buying my alien bees and I think it’s good to stay familiar with your gear. While the concept has been done before I wanted to shoot night time during the day and challenge myself to sculpt the light in the image.
Flash unit one is unmodified camera left, set up high almost to the ceiling and set at the full 1/1 power to drive through the two 1/4 blue gel CTOs taped around the head. For the “floating” part of the image the 2nd flash unit is camera right and snooted to direct the light towards my face and left side of my body. It was set at 1/8th power for this part of the image. For the “sleeping” part of the image I moved the flash to point toward the ground to enhance the glow from the side of the bed. I also upped the power to 1/4.
The most troublesome part of the image was setting the self timer to 20 seconds and jumping on the stool on the bed. It was NOT easy to balance and move my “Pjs” to try and hide the stool before the edit. Looking at the imported images in Lightroom I did this literally 45 times. The Sleeping portion was done in 2 shots." -Kevin Saunders
