A Samsung S8 Review and Return to the Daily Vlog

Once you've had the opportunity to feel the power of the community and your following, going without it must be hard. Casey Neistat is back with his daily vlog, and one of his latest videos is a review of the Samsung S8, which, according to the review, gives you more than an iPhone 7. The general feeling of the vlog now is that he's more relaxed, and is more responsible to his viewers. He obviously sees the vlog as something new, and has numbered the them from 01, starting again. He wears a helmet on his boosted board with a reflective jacket, and he states that he won't fly his drone as freely as he used to, due to so many people getting them and that he doesn't want to influence someone flying in places where people can get hurt.

Although a mobile phone isn't something photographers use to shoot with, it's still a tool you use on a daily basis, so it's important to know what it's latest capabilities are.

The Review of the S8

He makes it clear that he does work for Samsung every once in a while, so it's a biased review, but then he also mentions that he didn't get paid for the review, and that he had to beg them for the phone in order to do one.

The Samsung phone has a screen that curves around the edges like the previous model, but now it has fixed the finger sensitivity so it's actually doing what you want it to do. And, the screen is massive and there's almost no part of the front that's taken up by anything else. The screen is also "pure butter" which is a way of saying that it's almost difficult to see the pixels by eye.

Casey compares the phone's size to the iPhone models, and also compares the video quality by having them side by side. According to other resources, the front-side camera is identical to the S7 although the front-facing "selfie" camera has been improved but in the comparison I'd still choose the iPhone.

Conclusion

Casey doesn't do specs, he does usability and gives you an idea of what the camera would be like to use on a daily basis. That's what he does well. His style of video also has a way of you feeling the pain when he drops his equipment or flies his drone into a wall. He makes things real with his videos. It's the same for the S8 review.

When watching his most recent vlogs it's as though he's opening a production studio. This is most likely part of the CNN acquisition and how he sees them working together. He's been doing the vlog for two years now. It's amazing to see this guy's constant delivery of outstanding work with regards to making entertaining video. I'm looking forward to his second take.

Are the articles not relevant to camera tech, photography and/or film making?

"The screen is also "pure butter" which is a way of saying that it's almost difficult to see the pixels by eye."

That is the norm with mobile devices of today. Actually, the norm is that it's *impossible* to see the pixels in normal use. I'm typing right now on an iPad mini 4 and it's display has a PPI of 326. Even with my magnified reading glasses I can't see any pixels. The best photos look like the best prints I made in the past from medium format film. The level of detail is outstanding. With phones of today the PPI is even higher, over 400. The new Samsungs are approaching 600 PPI, which is just a drain on the battery.

Samsung can make good hardware. Software/firmware, not so much. This is fairly common knowledge. I once owned three Samsung Blu-Ray players that went through many firmware updates and watching a movie was always a cross your fingers and hope it works kind of thing. My brother owns a 75" Samsung TV. Picture looks great, but I told him to seriously consider disabling auto updates.

even on a Z3 Compact 720p the pixels are too small to see... Tired of this kind of bullshit.
