When a lens is sold out, you always know it's a good sign. See what all the fuss is about with the new Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 PZ G lens.
When the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens was first released in 2019, I was pretty keen to have a look at all the specs because I was already an owner of the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens, which I was using with my 5D Mark IV. When I scrolled through the various specs, one that really stood out to me was the weight: 840 g. That's a pretty hefty lens, I thought at the time, as my EF 16-35mm lens was only 615 g (the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM lens is 790 g). It's all relative, of course, but still, one of the main driving forces behind the mirrorless revolution (in the eyes of many) was their supposedly light, compact nature. That didn't really play out with mirrorless lens weights at the time.
That all brings us to this great video brought to you by Christopher Frost in which he reviews the new Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 PZ G lens. Built for full frame mirrorless Sony cameras, the FE 16-35mm f/4 PZ G lens looks like a very good lens for a multitude of reasons. Naturally, the one that really stood out for was the weight: 353 g. That is almost 500 g lighter than its Canon counterpart (though the Canon does have an extra stop at f/2.8, and one extra millimeter in the zoom range). Even so, that is quite extraordinary. But what about image quality? Give the video watch, and I'm pretty sure you'll come away as impressed as I did. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
I purchased this lens mainly for live music video on stage work . I have used it for one show so far . Also purchased Sonys cabled remote so I could zoom in and out . As a rocker zoom control it doesn’t work with much control . But to just use it to change the fov and focal length it works just fine . I have semi reviewed the footage and it looked great. We went through and color balanced our footage and it looked to have good saturation straight out of camera. Some of me Sony lenses I’ve had to add color saturation. I added very very little to this lenses footage.
So far I’m liking the lens just fine the autofocus seemed to work flawlessly also .
