At 15 years old, I took my first picture. It was at the Dachau concentration camp, a particularly emotional place as I'm Jewish. The pictures were crap. But what I did take away from that experience is that by placing a camera between myself and what I'm viewing opens up a world of opportunities. It takes the focus off "me" and places it squarely on the "what." For me, the act of taking a photograph elevates seeing to an art.
