Why You Get Stuck in Creative Ruts and How to Get Out of Them

Creative ruts happen to just about everyone, and they can be both frustrating and detrimental, particularly if you derive your income from your work, often leading to a vicious circle. If you find yourself stuck in a rut and unsure of how to get out of it, check out this great video that discusses why these lulls happen and what you can do to get the creative juices flowing again.

Coming to you from Rick Bebbington, this excellent video discusses the issue of creative ruts and how to fix them. I think the most important thing to remember is to not get down on yourself when you are having trouble being creative, as it is something everyone struggles with, whether they are a beginner or a seasoned professional. Besides simply taking a break, the thing that has always helped me is to create an arbitrary limitation on myself, like only shooting with a slow shutter speed. The limitation itself is not important; rather, the act of working with it and solving the problems it presents often helps you to break through the creative block and see things from a reinvigorated perspective. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Bebbington.
