How to Take Advantage of Lightroom's Powerful New Masking Features

Lightroom's latest update brought huge upgrades to its masking features, making the tools far more capable and much easier to use. If you are wondering how to use the new tools and take full advantage of them, check out this fantastic video tutorial that takes a deep dive into the new masking panel to show you everything you need to know.

Coming to you from Chelsea Nicole Photography, this awesome video tutorial will show you everything you need to know about Lightroom's new masking capabilities. I edited my first big batch of photos since the update this weekend, and I have to say that I was highly impressed by the new features and capabilities. For example, I had many photos of an indoor concert with a glass wall showcasing a garden behind the stage. To get the stage's exposure close to correct, I had to vastly overexpose the sky behind it — just below the point of blowing it out. Using the highlights and whites sliders only did so much to bring it back. What I really needed was to mask the sky and pull the exposure down, but down so was just more trouble than it was worth with all the leaves and such. I used to use a graduated filter, but it was never quite perfect. However, the new masking tool picked up the sky through the leaves almost instantly with no issues at all, and I got much better results with less effort. Check out the video above for the full rundown.
