How to Know the Perfect Moment to Take a Picture

Cameras are more advanced than ever, but at the end of the day, nothing can replace the sort of experience, technique, and intuition that all go into knowing exactly when to press the shutter to capture that perfect moment. So, how exactly do you know when to press the shutter release? This fantastic video essay discusses the topic and how to improve your own sense of timing.

Coming to you from Maarten Heilbron, this great video essay discusses the topic of timing in photography and how you can improve yours. No doubt, this is something that is crucial in a ton of genres — sports, weddings, street work, and more. One important thing to remember is that while listening to the advice of professionals and considering different approaches is all worthwhile, there is no replacement for simply practicing. That is, there is no shortcut for simply getting out there with your camera and practicing over and over until you have developed that kind of intuition. One of the best sports photographers I know does not even shoot in burst mode for a lot of situations, simply because his timing is so well tuned after decades of experience that he doesn't need to waste time sorting through extra images.  Check out the video above for the full rundown from Heilbron.
