Taken at sunset a couple of months ago at an estuary not far from home. I go here often and this guy is always there. A lone male egret. Usually busy catching fish, this time he was standing on a submerged log preening himself. The sun was very low, lighting him side on. I’ve photographed him enough to know that manual exposure is a must due to him being nearly pure white. As a consequence everything else is left in darkness. This one a little more than others but that’s what I was after. Both card slots are set to record raw files so when imported they’re color but I have my live view set to monochrome as I find it easier to check contrast so this was the image I saw straight away. Raw files imported into Capture 1 with a basic conversion to B&W then exported to jpeg at around 50% size. Captured with a Canon 1dx Mk II with a 400mm telephoto attached. 1/5000th sec, f2.8, ISO 320
