STORY: “Forest Bathing”
Shinrin-Yoku

“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves”—Henry David Thoreau (father of environmentalism)

The practice of retreating to nature to find stillness and calm is age-old. Forest Bathing, offers a model of health promotion in our modern-day blitzkreig of electronic intrusion, as we live tethered to our devices within a state of ‘technostress’. Here, amid the maritime forest, mingling with the shades and hue of night, evidence of this lays the foundation, a study in the art of ‘being’, reconnecting with life in the Virtual Age. Night bears the natural remedy, a prescribed immersion launched into an inexhaustible range marking the beach as the threshold, filling that void, facing and colliding into the jewels of night’s sky. Undying, unhurried, among the woods, the heroism of ligneous and languid driftwoods, whose character is hewn roughly by sun, wind, the brine of the air, pouring rain and dissolving ocean, bare branches robbed, toughened and calloused as skin, sink in the shallow, sealed by salt-saturated basins. The back-shore flat barrier beach, filled by rising tides, farther dives towards the sea, surging to form pool deposits and gullies resembling long ponds that reflect as puddles of stars. Sea-bathing skeletal driftwoods on the shore sheltering landscape are covered by the dampness, amid a vast array of trees, palms, grasses, an understated ecological environment on the constant rearrangement of the ever-changing face of the strand.

Love the composition, but I would darken down the foreground and get rid of those halos around the tree branches.

Glad you entered the contest Kyra! Did you add your photo from Marineland?
