On-camera flash fill will better highlight her face and put a catch light in her eyes. Can you get into some post processing? With post processing a little skin smoothing (just a very little), and some tonal warming would help this photo a lot. There are some inexpensive retouching programs out there like Affinity (no, I'm not sponsored by them) that are relatively easy to operate. I give you two stars for getting yourself out there. Keep at it, practice, practice, practice.
These were literally taken the day before I saw the contest open and this is straight off-camera JPEG before I darktable the raws into what I'd normally use. On-camera flash isn't going to do anything with ~70mm at ten feet in (cloudy) daylight but I know what you're saying.
